Research shows that the interactions that young children have with literacy materials like books, paper, and crayons, and with the adults in their lives are the building blocks for language, reading and writing development. Currently in Michigan, there are nearly 200,000 kids under age 6 living in poverty, 50,000 Michigan babies born every year on Medicaid, 40,000 at-risk preschoolers unable to access quality early education because of budget cuts, and the 16,000 students who will drop out before graduating this spring.
