Current Events

Local
Research shows that the interactions that young children have with literacy materials like books, paper, and crayons, and with the adults in their lives are the building blocks for language, reading and writing development. Join the Writing to Reading Group for kids 3-5 years in Brown City or Deckerville. Register at 888-580-KIDS for group. Learn and participate in FUN Activities that promote kindergarten readiness. Playgroups for children ages birth to 5 years countywide. Please contact (888)580-KIDS for more locations and times.

Parents

Please join us for Parent Coalition meeting 2nd Monday of every month at 5:30PM. Meetings are informal for parents and caregivers to discuss the issues that mean the most to you! All are welcome, childcare and snacks provided. Sign up with Nina Barnett (810)648-2200 Ext. 109.

Partial preschool scholarships available for children 3, 4 and 5 years of age. Scholarships made possible by the Sanilac Community Foundation and the Great Start Parent Coalition.

STATE
Currently in Michigan, there are nearly 200,000 kids under age 6 living in poverty, 50,000 Michigan babies born every year on Medicaid, 40,000 at-risk preschoolers unable to access quality early education because of budget cuts, and the 16,000 students who will drop out before graduating this spring. If you find any of these issues upsetting, join the Great Start Collaborative Sanilac in our efforts to improve the lives of our youngest residents, or contact your local legislator directly and tell them you expect their support for early childhood programs and services. senmgreen@senate.michigan.gov or PaulMuxlow@house.mi.gov
